Both teachers died in 1980 and between them had provided over sixty years service to essentially the same schools, the latter being Colton Hills.
It was decided that a fitting memorial should be set, and hence Gelliwig came about. A property was purchased in Porthmadog, Wales and created into a residential centre for young people from the Wolverhampton area and in particular pupils from Colton Hills School.
After many years of fund-raising a suitable property, Gelliwig, was converted to accommodate 30 people. It was also adapted for physically-handicapped people, including wheelchair users, to enable them also to enjoy the facilities. The official opening of Gelliwig, was in 1989 by
Mrs Lil Thompson, widow of John Thompson. Since this time thousands of young people have enjoyed a residential experience in Wales.
Whilst the majority have made a cost-effective contribution to the facility, some are given a concession and in certain cases complimentary use of Gelliwig.
The Fund has been supported in many ways by groups and organisations over many years, and through its usage by these groups it has been noted that we need to update and improve the facilities offered by Gelliwig.
These improvements would continue to offer the user groups an excellent
residential visit, but would enable much better accommodation and more opportunities to use the house to its full potential. Therefore, we are now embarking on our new project to make these changes and are calling it the Gelliwig Times Two project.
